Pigeons Really Deliver
In the days before radio, pigeons were often used to deliver important news
and
financial information. Homing pigeons were also
"drafted" into wartime message delivery service during World War I
and
World War II, as well as other regional conflicts, such as
Napoleon's siege on Paris. Many pigeons received special medals and honors
for
delivering lifesaving messages during the wars.
Pigeons are still used today to
deliver film for a Colorado white-water
rafting
outrigger, to
carry interdepartmental messages between
police precients in India, and perhaps more commonly, in the
sport and
hobby of
racing pigeons.
Another thing worth mentioning is that any time you see a ceremonial
release of
"doves," such as at a wedding, funeral, Disneyland,
the Olympics, or the grand opening celebration of a new business, what you
are
really seeing is a breed of white racing homers.
Although pigeons are doves, the birds seen in pet stores and otherwise
commonly
thought of as doves do not posess the homing
instinct of a specially bred homing pigeon, and to release such a bird in
this
fashion would most likey be to subject it to predation or
starvation.
